Thursday Sonnet: Proverb

They say to be your lover and your poet
Would be to have one’s cake and eat it also.
But I don’t get it. Sorry if I’m slow,
But if you have a cake, to want to eat it
Is pristine logic, right? I mean, there’s not
Much else you can do with a cake that’s fitter
(Except leap out of one – if you’re a stripper).
In any case, I’ve written all the octet
And still have not said anything eternal
(Unless in poetry’s forthcoming age
Disputes on proverbs turn to be the rage),
This sonnet’s terrible! – well nigh infernal!
Oh, words of love would take me half the nerve
Could I be half the poet you deserve!
