A VERY SAD THING (I.P.)

On Monday I saw a very sad thing.
I walked in the park as the day was so fine
Then I saw a poor fish on a fisherman’s line –
And that was a very sad thing.
On Tuesday I saw yet another sad thing.
Some men in the forest forbade me to enter –
They were cutting down trees for a new shopping centre.
And that was another sad thing.
On Wednesday I saw such a shocking sad thing.
Pensioners dying because of cold weather
Millionaire politicians say: ‘we’re in it together’
And that was a shocking sad thing.
On Thursday I saw the most awful sad thing.
Watching TV eating burgers and fries –
Saw starving young children with death in their eyes.
And that was the most awful sad thing.
On Friday I saw such a poignant sad thing.
I went to the airport for some reason that day
Saw a poor Mother weep as her child went away.
And that was a poignant sad thing.
On Saturday I saw a truly sad thing
I woke in the morning as bright as can be –
And then I remembered that Mother was me.
And that was a truly sad thing.
On Sunday I saw the saddest sad thing.
A woman in my mirror who could no longer cope
In a world full of sorrow she had given up hope.
And that was the saddest sad thing.
