Gloves off

We're in a boxing ring ding dong
the ref pulls us apart as punches
high low quick slow they are flying
stinging flying hard and fast
Round one is where it all began
loudly bells fill the summer air
a church spire climbs the sky
romantic vows loving lasting looks
Round two already both looking
for those killer punches the killer blow
the crowd cheers loudly they clap
at the surreal foolishness of us
Round three it's not just you
it's me another one came along
another left hook you are
laying devasted on the floor
Round four you get up
fighting back the points
well they start to go your way
I stagger legs wobbily I sway
Round five well I throw in the towel
had enough battered and bruised
you win I get out of the ring
and I want to finish this poem
So we are in a boxing ring ding dong
just be careful what you say
cos those words they hurt they sting
but I am not getting out of this ring x
