Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie
was born on this day, many years ago.
I shall refrain from mentioning when
because it is not respectful to ask
or reveal a lady's age, so I am told,
and I wouldn't venture to be so bold.
One doesn't have to be a detective,
like Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple
(two of the characters she created)
to find out the information, though,
as the public records will show
that the year in question was in fact
one thousand eight hundred ninety.
It was an eventful year: Germany,
Austria-Hungary and Italy formed
what was called the Triple Alliance
and Van Gogh died in France.
Yet we don't remember this date
for poor Vincent's unhappy fate
but for the birth of a prolific author
Her detective novels numbered 66,
every one full of ingenious tricks.
