He’d seen “Bicycle Thieves”
and liked that film a lot;
a neorealist masterpiece
with an intricate plot.
At the Odeon cinema
there was a retrospective
and seeing it once again
would prove quite affective.
It didn’t take very long
for him to decide:
got a ticket and went in
leaving the bike outside.
He trusted people’s honesty:
no chain and no padlock.
He came out and realised
his mistake with a shock,
his wheels had disappeared.
His expression was stony
when the penny dropped.
He now travels on shank’s pony.

btw, you can put things under 2 genre headings now eg 'humour' and 'inspiration point' if you want to.

Neat little story amusingly tied together. Liked this ending - your poem brought a smile.

Not only did the Inspiration Point bring back the memory of that film, it also enabled me to recall a similar real incident many years ago when a certain person, being naive or too trustful, had temporarily left a bicycle against a wall without any safeguard. The fact that it was new was too tempting for the thief to ignore. Putting the two together, it was then easy to concoct this story which you say made you smile. I don't think that rhyming poetry ever went away, J S. Some topics, especially humorous ones, are better suited to this style while others - more soulful - can be expressed in blank verses. I am in two minds about your last remark; whether it is appreciative or ironic. Whichever it is meant to be, I thank you for your feedback.
