Our village had a burglar
who was a scallywag.
During his nightly raids
he never hit a snag.
Said he was a gentleman
which was rather quaint
as he was an old lag
and not at all “The Saint”.
If he ever saw an opening
to steal someone's treasure
he didn't feel any guilt
but a perverse pleasure.
The rascal thought it was
entirely the victim's fault
for being careless enough
and not locking the vault.
Assets were not secure;
there was a gaping hole
which enabled the plunderer
to relish what he stole.
The inhabitants got wise
and finally closed the gap
thus stopping the activity
of the disreputable chap.

Kind of felt sorry for the burglar!
Think your apostrophe on victims' needs shifting left due to the definite article.

I had to read this twice with a smile. I had former school mate that turned out be a burglar. From what I heard, a really good one at that. I ran into him once at an airport bar some years ago before his last arrest. He thought and said exactly as you describe it "entirely the victims fault". And for him it was like a professional sport, he really enjoyed the thrill. Your captured and eloquintly wrote what I heard and saw..... Well done Luigi
