Bedtime Stories

Bedtime stories started

with a parent clutching

dog-eared worn tomes;

fantasies, illusions to

hold children in awe.

 

Tales told after dark,

nightfall painted blue,

whispering narrations

of arcane lore, fables

to suspend credence.

 

Like clocks stopped by

incandescent lightning

over imaginary lands

where fire-ships sail

and dock at twilight.

 

Like satin-skied stars

guiding voyages below,

carefully navigating

distant archipelagos

along starlit journeys.

 

Pale moonlight spilling

onto cobbled courtyards,

melting tallow marking

the wax and wane

of a single teardrop

 

In realms: brave heroes

and heroines battling,

where dragons exhale,

witches scry in mirrors,

wizards hold dominion.

 

Words trail to ether,

slumber takes them

to Narnian ventures,

quiet discourse fading

as the volume closes.

Sounds as if you have good memories of such. Those tales seem to have a gentle foundation of good triumphing, hope, purpose, clarity of moral values and such associated with comfortable happiness. Rhiannon

Thanks, Rhiannon. Yes, I guess the emphasis is on optimistic outcomes. Maybe that's what children expect.

Wonderful poem PauI. I could really emerse my inner child's imagination as I read. But then I just love fantasy and you've really captured the essence perfectly.

There's little more magical than a bedtime story, and you've captured that perfectly here! I insisted on telling/reading bedtime stories to my kids for as many years as I possibly could - never mind them, I loved it!

That was a lovely poem to read before bed. As adults, it's easy to forget about the limitless fantasy worlds which are often level with the real world when we are children. I want to go on a starlit journey.

They often say how imortant it is to read stories to kids, especially mother tongues and they really enjoy it tremendously. They also read children stories each night on the radio, I like listening to them myself, especially Nali Bali for the little kiddies! And the Narnia books were always my favourite.

Thanks for reading, Nolan. I have only seen the Narnia movie and never read the book. I missed out there. Yes, hopefully the tradition of bedtime stories for children will continue forever.

The tradition of bedtime stories will last, has stood the test of time. There is something magical about it.

If you enjoyed the Narnia films I'm sure you can get the books, the whole set it is seven I think, they read easily, written for teeanagers really, by CS Lewis he was a famous writer, mostly spririual.

Brilliant words Paul, describing just how bedtime stories are meant to be.

From my experience the bedtime stories were read to get the kids off to sleep but halfway through I would often hear the words 'Dad! Dad! Wake up! You haven't finished reading the story.' as a sharp corner of Miffy at the Zoo penetrated the flesh on my face with each weary nod of my head.

Cheers, T. Bedtime stories synonymous with childhood so a happy association for most. My parents never read to us in this way so it's just my interpretation of what I've seen and read.
