I don’t remember seeing them when I was younger. I saw many of their family members, Mum, Dad, brothers, Sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandparents, great grandparents, you get the picture.
All the family members, had one thing in common, they all put the fear of God into me.
I have killed many of them, over the years, sad to say, others I know have done the same thing.
Spiders have had a raw deal! A lot of people don’t like them, at all, the poor things, they can’t help it been spiders.
But, a few years ago, something very strange happened, I saw an odd-looking spider, and I called it an invisible spider. It was SO thin, that when I asked Paul to put it outside, it was so fragile looking, we were frightened it would be killed! We didn’t want it killed, especially me. Paul Loves all spiders, he had fifty tarantulas when I met him, they were his pets!
From seeing those one-off invisible spiders, now they are everywhere! Maybe because, everyone was thinking the same thing, it is harmless, fragile, sweet, no threat.
Now there are a lot of them in our house. ☹
I still would not hurt any of them, they still don’t frighten me.
Yesterday as I sat on the sofa, one suddenly appeared by my head, I wasn’t alarmed, I just got up and watched it climb up to the celling. Now, if that was another type of spider, it would have been curtains!
Sadly, some have not made it, as Paul tried to gently get them out of the bath for me; that has only been 2 or 3.
I have heard that they have caught and killed and eaten, the bigger spiders found in the home! That’s a ‘good’ thing for us who are not keep on them, not good for the bigger spiders.
I have also heard that the invisible spiders, the name that I gave them, I have heard that they are called Cellar Spiders!
We have got an attic and a cellar.

sometimes known as Daddy long legs.
Like youI don't remember ever seeing these when I was young (in London), but as you say they seem to be everywhere.
The animal I knew as a Daddy Longlegs was comletely different with enormous legs compared to their body usually in the garden rarely in the house and didn't make webs. These new guys seem to love being indoors rather than outside and make annoying large webs which seem to be in every corner.
I wonder if these have somehow blown in from warmer parts of Europe over the years
These are the ones I used to know as Daddy LLs when I was a kid
