I like to watch the fire engines

In the library there is a desk by the window
that looks out at the fire station
a greyslab building and the more you look

the more you forget it's a fire station
but then suddenly there are flashes of light
and the whole world is a single carriageway

with cars indicating and pulling over
and I like to watch the fire engines
think that somewhere there are falling beams

voices shouting 'Help, help.'
Sometimes the sun stops working
and one of the men gets out a ladder, climbs up

replaced the bulb. And when the earth stops turning
a few of them get hold of it at one side
give it a nudge.
