The Hike To Nightfall
by Paul McCann
.
On a hike through the evergreen way
the sound of a gushing stream
cascaded round our ears
as thoughts poured through our open minds
to a place where no one ever hears .
A silent reprieve from the clutch of cold concrete
we found sanctuary welcome us home
where tree ferns glistened
as the touch of twilight fell
where butterflies are left to drift alone .
Peace fell where water fell from higher ground
and all around
nature’s beauty looked back as us .
We stepped back and glanced
as the sun danced in the sky
just before the dusk .
I listened to the waterfall
as she spoke with soaking sounds
of the fish before our time
and how they drank natures beauty
and leapt from the streams
to fill their gills with liquid sunshine .
We took a long look at the hidden spaces
between the higher ground
and reached out our hand
and touched a deep moment before the sun set
to allow the night to fall over the land..
