On A Hilltop
By Paul McCann
On the top of a hill lived the owner of a mill, they say Andrews was his name and from Comber he came . Edenderry village was built from limestone and silt . Mill workers arrived and they worked like slaves to survive . The war wounded were in need of bandages and feed So all around a hilltop Andrews set up his shop . Spinning like a top, Irish linen was running hot, Until the war came to a stop then linen went flop. People in poverty kept the linen industry, smoking away until Andrews had called it a day . One by one linen mills shut down around Belfast town, but on a hilltop was a place that just couldn’t stop . On a hilltop it came true . Holy Cross parish grew. With the spirit and will to build lives around the mill . Take a coin from Edenderry change it to Ardoyne . That’s how it was arranged in the bank times always change . As one people they’ve joined in the village of Ardoyne . |
