a multitude of totems
spaced out even in a row
with new ones still created
as the need for them would grow
.
the people in the village
in the county, in the state
would use these special totems
so they could communicate
.
a totem caught the message
which was passed on down the line
one whisper, then another
like a shiver down a spine
.
the air around them humming
like a song caught in the breeze
with voices running everywhere
to say just what they pleased
.
but things began evolving
to a new telepathy
and totems slowly faded
like a ship lost on the sea
.
you cannot stop the future
you can't even slow it down
i felt a bit of sadness
on the day the poles went down
