WASHED UP LOVE

you told me it was over
but you didn't realize
before i heard it from your lips
i saw it in your eyes
.
my mind became quite fuzzy
i just turned and walked away
my tongue had lost all language
there was nothing left to say
.
i went down to the ocean
where we'd spent such happy days
as if to match my mood
the beach was gray and filled with haze
.
i sat and watched the sea
it was like love, without a doubt
a thing that rushes in
and just as quickly rushes out
.
i ran my fingers through the sand
my tears began to swell
i drew a heart and then inside
i wrote your name as well
.
the tide began encroaching
and it lapped at my design
until you were extinguished
out of sight and out of mind
.
the next day i was sleeping
and a ring disturbed my rest
it was your mother on the phone
her voice was pinched and stressed
.
she told me you had lost your life
your body had been found
along a foggy stretch of beach
apparently you'd drowned

This is so sad, alvin. A poignant poem, indeed.
