Lesotho, as the petals fall

We crossed the border
into fields of cosmos -
the sunflowers
turning away from us.
To our backs
the town
fell into hands
of army rebels.
There were no casualties.
One man died,
in an unrelated
accident,
they said
on the news.
And we watched it on TV
in a hotel room -
the Lesotho Refugees,
eating peanuts from the mini bar
while two factions
camped on bare yellow mountaintops,
dressed in green camouflage
and stopped the war
for tea.
