Christmas Conception by Neil McCall
He wasn't conceived in any bed
but this was our first settled Christmas,
the toddler gone to sleep,
the tree lights softly glowing
reflected in wine and your eyes.
The rug was, in retrospect,
nasty, white and cheap
but served its purpose admirably
to softly cushion your sliding hips
one fire-brightened, one in shadow.
He was born late September
amidst the regrets and mishaps
of mistletoe seductions;
equally unplanned
but him, for one, so wanted.
