A Friend or a Foe
P K Routray
Dissipates man much power of his thought
on his enemies and the ploys they may plot.
Enemies to a man can be internal or external.
Comparing to enemy external internal enemy is more lethal.
Vanity, jealousy attachment, lust, greed and anger
as internal enemies in mind of a man they harbor.
External injury can be cured over a few days
but internal injury borne in mind indefinitely blaze
In spite of all worldly wealth and power at man’s disposal
the wretched will be his condition with anguish colossal.
Mind is the faculty when conquered, can be the best friend
to end such turmoil the soothing effect the trained mind can lend.
On the other hand if mind is left free and if it turns as a foe
man will be squeezed under misery and crushed under its blow.
A conquered and tamed mind can be the best friend,
the unconquered mind remains as man’s deadly foe till the end.
