A Household tradition
P K Routray
I beg to tell you a curious customary tradition,
followed in every Indian house belonging to the sects of the Hindu religion
Each house has a place for daily worship,
with number of idols representing many a deities making the setup.
Though the Almighty is one and only one,
but the numerous deities represent His multifaceted power and energy in trillion.
Each house has a special place under the open sky in front,
on a high place with basil plant in a pot,
Where in the morning water is poured at the basil plant by the ladies after bath,
On the evening a wick dipped on ghee is burnt before this tree with devotion and faith.
Theist or atheists have faith in this traditional system,
fear of the deities and basil plant inculcated in them from childhood force in them this wisdom.
this system of many deities and basil plant may look to some as strange and fanciful,
But this system has psychological impression on us from infancy doing things rightful and noble.
As we see the deities from childhood with awesome love and devotion,
we have a feeling that whatever does happen to us is for our good as He is our own.
In my case my fear, faith, love and devotion have remained unchanged for my family deity,
it is the same immaterial whether I am seven or seventy.
