A Poem that affected me most
P K Routray
The Bhagabatam is a great scripture of the Hindu religion,
with eighteen thousand verses in Sanskrit to meditate upon.
Each verse has potentiality to have profound impact on human race,
All of the verses are captivating with their significance and grace.
A few verses though very simple are with clear doctrine,
had affected my thoughts as these only can save a man from ruin.
One of the central figures of the epic is Parikshit an emperor,
He used to visit his kingdom in disguise to have direct knowledge as a true ruler
On one such visit he found Kali the era monster,
torturing the righteous, virtue and earth the mother,
The king overpowered Kali the wicked,
to banish nim from the earth he ordered the wretched.
Kali begged profuse apology with promise,
for some places to live in peace without any menace.
Out of mercy and royal duty the king gave him four places to live on the earth,
one of the places was casino where gambling goes on with fun and mirth,
The other three were brothels, bars and slaughter house with nefarious activities,
He was a confident that his subjects would never dream of visiting these sites.
Kali caught hold of king’s feet for one more place to have a little more freedom,
The king out of compassion granted him a place in the gold in his kingdom.
The rest what happened is a story and discourse of many a day and a year,
but the sermons here for us are crystal clear.
Kali represents the worst period of time with all negativity,
The gold symbolizes the greed for wealth and ill gotten prosperity.
All the five banished sites are causes of human misery,
This is for me the most effective poem affecting my life’s story.
