SALT
P K Routray
To conceive and compose
either in poetry or prose
varied subjects, poets ponder,
sparkle some by providence to their wonder.
Subjects, many from passion to prayer,
categories, a lot from sorrows to satire
flash across the inner eyes of every author
to paint it on their canvass for the reader.
An unusual subject not sweet nor sweat but salt,
to which from day one mankind owes a lot,
peeps within me to get a shade of brush
or else, me, my ungratefulness for salt will crush.
Sweet is given greater height and honor
ornamenting love, beauty, music and nature.
Salt finds no place in poems on par with sweet.
Forget the readers and writers, to live and survive they need it.
One can live, as diabetics do, for years without sweet
but to live without salt for a day or two, is a painful plight.
Why do we forget our love, longing and essentials so true?
Appeal I both composers and readers to think a while for something to do.
Neglected if you are, you retaliate with anger
Neglect salt, you will feel the pinch in your lunch and dinner.
