A tale of two friends
A boy under nine
mind fickle, brain benign
running for life through zigzag lanes
passing through unknown domains
with spleen-chilling fears
giving no time to eyes to shed tears
to save himself from his frenemy's attack
who were his playmates hours back.
at a clue on a plan by a friend
him, who wanted to defend
who smelled the foul ploy
designed for their nefarious joy
by playmates of his street
over a confidential meet
to avenge their defeat
his friend, they would beat.
Advised he, his friend to run away
before the miscreants’ foul
play.
Despite parental bar
not to go from house far
the boy was slipping daily to play
at a place from his house, miles away
stealthily hoodwinking his mother’s eye
His siblings’ silences, he could easily buy.
This tale occurred seven
decades back
the setup, to this tale one may well track
with no street light to aid in the dark, the sight
to a boy grips the fear of darkness’s cover
when the ghost ghouls merrily flutter.
On boy’s turmoil and agitations
with apprehensions
contemplate I often
“ How in him those would have run.”
Prayed he the lord
boons to accord
to save him from the attack
and the thrashings at home, back.
Promised he, offerings, plenty
if he escapes then scot-free.
To be obedient to parents
abandoning any nuisance
he promised to be a good boy.
And also buy the Lord’s mood
for a reprieval
on his task upheaval.
With umpteen such promises in mind
ran he fast without looking behind.
Out of their sight, he wanted to flee.
with vows for the future, them, he would see.
With two his battle will be a battle lost
The fat boy, he feared the most
but he would not be able to run
for him, it was a great consolation.
but as they were more in number
to them, he would have to surrender.
with torn shirt and bruises many
back at home, he would look funny
that will irk the father
he would face his anger.
When he would grow
with strength and muscle show
he would take revenge on them, each
“if on them his present plans fail to reach.”
that with a group of boys of his street
he would give them a befitting treat.
with friends of his class
he would beat them each in mass.
By each one's name
charges he would frame
instigate their parents and teachers
to bruise them by their rages of anger.
with thoughts, many in his brain
he was running as a boy insane.
The friend who gave the advice
was fearful of the price
what he would have to pay
to see the intended boy slipping away
to playmates on his street
daily on the play, they meet
now him, they might befriend
their anger he would not be able to amend
to lose such friends he cannot afford
Prayed he for himself to the Lord
prayed he also for the friend on the run
whose intimacy for all times he won.
Thoughts of both then me haunt me now
Dances in me, this seven-decade-back show.
Our classmate Lalit was
rescuer and Gopal was rescued
this incident of their child
hood to their intimacy is a prelude.
Both friends are now approaching the age of eighty
with such treasures of their
childhood love in the kitty.
Remain they close for years, seventy
pray we it to continue for eternity
Hey Lalit, Hey Gopal! friends, bosom!
Accept our accolades from hearts bottom
with prayers and wishes for both of you
“ Long live your childhood intimacy divine and true.”
