The Hermit of Subiaco

Even on those starving hills, life was everywhere
ants teemed on a broken cup
serpents slid through ox-blood rocks.
Romanus would come with the sun on his shiny face
ripe fruit and a reminder that life has infinite value
yet other days, the storms would cut his world away
howling through the gulley
a requiem for hungry man.
Ravens came, what god would send a creature so despised
to ease the waste of muscle
stave off the taste of death
violate that sacred space with carrion
was there no other way?
Must human mouths accept the stuff of beak and claw
when harsh caws fade into the valley
upon black wings
