A proper Sunday, not going out. Cold, bitter. Wind, satisfyingly howly. Plenty milk in the fridge for homemade cappuccinos (I have a gadget), watching the snow-bomb blanket everything, while keeping cosy inside. Was so looking forward to staying home a couple of days while it snows. Had imagined what walks I’d go when the weather wasn’t quite so wild. Maybe back up to the standing stones, get some snowy snaps. Got all Christmas-eve-cosy thinking about it. Anyway, very exciting, the hail stones started at 2pm, just as I was making the soup (butternut squash). It was all going to plan; cosy as ‘Delia’s Classic Christmas’, picture-perfect in my mind’s eye. ‘I smell snow’ moments. It’d be fabulous.
Annoyingly, the hail stones didn’t last and the snow didn’t materialise at all. There is still the seeping cold though. Heating turned up, kettle on, snow no-show huff in full puff. May as well have a cappuccino anyway.
Being unable to go out for a wee jaunt somewhere isn’t pleasant. Not that I’m unable, I’m unwilling. I don’t drive in snow, and don’t risk getting stuck anywhere because buses could get cancelled. Even though it didn’t snow at the coast, inland is probably blanketed, and you can only find that out the hard way. Stuck waiting for buses that aren’t coming, or skidding a perfect circle at a roundabout. Which only happened once, years ago. I was late for work and still half asleep, so didn’t brake when the skid started, as I wasn’t alert enough to react. It was a perfect Walt Disney skid, yellow Beetle pirouetting a full 360 degrees. Circles within circles. The drivers, waiting to get on the roundabout, watching with open ‘O’ mouths, like they were singing the go-oh-ld part in ‘five go-oh-ld rings’.
Oh, let it snow!
