The Friday Murder Club

Friday was a blah day. Dull white, running with rain and water-laden mist. A day to stay home, light candles, tidy for the weekend. Except, I couldn’t stay home. Something, probably too much Hallowe’en chocolate, was making me antsy. Had to get out of the house. Happened to see the ARC cinema listings, and ‘The Heretic’ was showing at three. Thought I’d get the silicone for the door windows, take some rubbish to the dump, and maybe get some spooky All Hallows’ Day photos in Deer Abbey grounds on the way there.
Got to Deer Abbey, where a black estate car was parked outside. The site is open all year ‘round, just shorter hours October to March. Parked and went to the door, which was not only closed, but locked. Not the keyhole lock, it felt like it was bolted from the inside. Rattled the door, but no sound or movement. There was a sign saying work is ongoing, but that only parts of the Abbey were closed. Why bolt the door from the inside? Looked in the back window of the estate, it was a mess of empty water bottles and a couple of Co-op bags for life. What if someone was camping inside Deer Abbey? Performing satanic rituals? Murder even?
Got back in my car pronto, and drove on to the cinema, (where Hugh Grant gave an interesting monologue on iterations, and the film gave a few good frights).
On the way home, about 5.45pm, in the pitch black evening, the black estate car was still there. What if they had had an accident? It must be completely dark inside the Abbey walls.
When I got home, all set to phone the police, googled to double check the opening times first.
It said the site was currently closed.
