Egg-hunt with a difference (based on a true story)
She gave them each a plastic egg,
– the kind you can unscrew,
and sent them out to search for what
might speak of life anew
(maybe a flower, bud, or leaf?):
then hide it out of view.
When they came back, the row of eggs
were opened one by one;
the last was empty, so they laughed
– why had that boy not done
the task as set? they teased and mocked,
and hurt him with their scorn.
The teacher shushed, but gently asked
why nothing was inside ?
For, unlike them, she understood
his handicap and pride
(he struggled with so many things):
– ‘its like the grave’, he cried,
‘The grave was empty’, – (sign to all
that He has life anew!).
Ashamed, they looked on with respect.
… And eggs you can unscrew
his friends to church brought, when he died,
– with ‘nothing’ there to view!
