“Our daughter and husband’s 30 acres of serenity is on the outskirts of Houston, BC, and they live in a magnificent log house, alongside Hungry Mountain. My poem identifies power in land and dweller with a reference to bear and mountain. The intruder All Terrain Vehicle collecting winter wood returns home after its invitation to dwell momentarily; in a land surrounding.”

RHINO POWER 2

Escaping lowland the bear

flings itself against

the bone of Hungry Mountain,

climbing like a crab. An

All-terrain-vehicle motors up

the hillside, rounding steep

corners -- overcoming ravines,

crushing forgotten limbs.

A grizzly snorts inside

the immediate noise of engine,

not sure what it is but too

ominous to wrestle with –

The bear lumbers sideways

across the hill smothered in spruce,

salted with poplar. A comfy

fireplace awaits the woodcutter.

Hi, Richard. They are very similar aren't they? I think I prefer this one slightly. Probably prefer to know straight off what an ATV is! and I think I was puzzled a bit before about 'Mt. Rounds' though soon read the punctuation correctly! I liked the 'the hill smothered in spruce, salted with poplar.'here. I like the idea of 'Escaping lowland' . Here it seems to refer definitely to the bear. In version 1 it seemed to refer to either the bear or ATV? Rhiannon

Thank you so much, Rhiannonw. You confirmed my feelings. I see too many soppy comments because many can't absorb any honest critquing, eh? I remember one editor told me to stop the eh? silliness. My response, "I'm Canadian, eh?"
