Like I Do

I've seen her.
Puppy Sandals, Preppy shirt.
Yes, I've seen her.
Diamond headband, Rainbow skirt.
And it doesn't make much difference,
That you've never introduced us;
That you turn your head and look away,
If I pass you on the street.
#
But tell me, in the dead of night,
Does she slide across the space between you,
Her hot hands moving against your skin?
And I know she loves you too,
But I just can't keep from wondering,
Can she really love you like I do?
#
You always called me hard,
Hard as nails;
Nails as red as blood;
A look you used to love.
And it doesn't really matter all that much;
That her look is nothing at all like mine.
Black and white; chalk and cheese;
That's just the way it is.
I might turn my head to cry;
But still, I'm doing fine.

But tell me, in the dead of night,
Does she slide across the space between you,
Hot hands moving close against your skin?
And I know she loves you too,
And I've seen her bring you happiness.
But I just can't keep from wondering,
No, I just can't keep from thinking this:
Can she really love you like I do?
Could anybody love you like I do?
