This is my first book im writing, as im very new I have no idea if im doing a good job or not, so honest feedback would be great, thank you all in advance!
The book is about a young boy who ends up lost on an island all by himself, and has to defend himself with no money or modern day items.
The Clarkson family came from a long line of wealth, John Clarkson was one of the top lawyers in he's firm, he's wife Sarah a doctor with her own practice and there only child Nathan, 12, who knew nothing but the finer things and lived a life of luxury, Every year they would plan a trip and sail the open seas on there private yacht.
Nathan ran to the chauffeured car after school that day full of excitement, knowing the boat trip was tomorrow morning. the car drove through the long pathway to the house and parked right outside the front door. Nathan ran into the house and walked into the kitchen where he's dad was sitting on the side with a glass of whiskey.
"So where are we sailing to tomorrow dad?"
"Well son, there's an island right in the middle of the Pacific, that's completely uninhabited!"
Nathan looked up at he's dad with a confused face "so, there won't be anything there? What's the point?"
"Nathan, that is the point" he said as he gave he's son a wink and scruffed he's hair with he's hand.
The family always visited island resorts, with bars, parks, spas, safari adventures, you name it, they had it. But this year John wanted to show Nathan s simple side to the world and not spoil him with luxuries.
Nathan walked up the spiral stair case to his bedroom feeling deflated, he slowly started to pack hes things into hes rucksack thinking hard about what he`s going to need on hes trip. He picked up hes laptop, then put it back down. "I guess I wont be needing that, i doubt there will be internet where ever dad is taking us". he packed the essentials, spare underwear, a tooth brush and paste, asthma pump, power bank, phone and a couple bottles of pop for the trip.
"Sarah, are you done packing?" john shouted from across the hallway.
"yep, ill be with you in a minute hon"
John turned and poured himself another glass of whiskey, he sat on the bar stool, slowly shook the glass in circular motions and stared at the 2 ice cubes swirling around the glass.
"are you okay?" Sarah said as she walked into the room.
John jumped a little bit. "yeah, yeah I'm fine, its just, I'm not sure Nathan is going to enjoy it this year"
"well, wasn't the whole idea of this trip to teach him some real life values?, he cant live hes whole life being waited on hand and foot. as you keep saying hon, he needs to learn how to survive without money and expensive things"
"I guess your right, teaching him to fish, and make hes own meals, getting physical with nature and making our own hammocks, all these kinds of activates will make him happy after the trip, not before"
Sarah smiled, walked over to john and gave him a hug from behind. mean while Nathan was settling into bed, just as he was about to turn hes bedside lamp off he heard a knock on the door, it was hes father John.
"Nathan, I know your feeling a bit down because of the trip, but I promise you`ll have fun"
"dad, I don't want to go to a stupid island in the middle of no where! is there even a club house?"
"well, no. there isn't going to be anyone else there, just me, you and your mum. some quality time will do us good. i`ll teach you a thing or two about being in the wilderness"
Nathan, turned over in hes bed "I`ll be staying in the yacht thank you very much"
John walked over to hes bed, and put a book down on hes bedside table - survival 101. "just keep an open mind son, you can read this on the way to the dock in the morning, It might give you some inspiration."
07:00am had hit and Nathans alarm clock starting ringing, he rubbed hes eyes, saw the book John had put down next to him and threw it in hes rucksack, The smell of pancakes and bacon was the only reason Nathan decided to go downstairs. As Nathan walked into the kitchen he saw hes mum and dad sitting on the large dining table by the open bay windows.
Sarah turned and faced her boy with a smile "Morning son, hows my little angel today?"
"ill feel better when I can get WiFi and iceberg water again"
John gave a frown and scrunched up hes eyebrows. "you have just made this trip a lot easier for me Nathan, I look forward to opening your eyes up to the world"
John threw hes newspaper on the table, stood up and left the room.
"Nathan, your dad and I have spoiled you your entire life, he just wants you to grow into the best person you can be"
Nathan sat silently at the dinner table and ate hes food, whilst Sarah just pushed her leftovers around the plate in awkward silence. She wasn`t expecting the yearly family trip to be full of so much drama.
