America's greatness was founded by revolutionary ideals, built on our Bill of Rights, which allowed free enterprise to thrive outside of the stultifying control of central authority. We soared high and became the greatest of nations. We still hold that power largely based on credit from history, but in some sense we had lost that freedom and much of that greatness.
Then came the internet. Just as the Greek and Roman classics re-discovered by a growing literati sparked the original renaissance, and as the printing press fueled the industrial revolution, so the free internet spawned the great American renaissance in which we are in the early stages.. How far it will go and how high IT will soar is up to us.
It's largely up to the elders, but they too are a part of the digital society. They must have felt the benefits of free information and the free trade it stimulates... Why would they want to put cameras in every modem and cranny, and try for the centralized control that brought down Stalin and his warped empire? No, we must turn around in this regard
Our founding fathers established a free press to safeguard and advance our democracy... or republic. Unfortunately, all too often, the media corporations have become their own anti-democratic elite... complete with tightly organized censorship and false reality creation.
It wasn't that long ago that the basic facts of major American and world happenings were not being honestly dispersed to the public... and if things have improved, the free people's presses that have formed via the internet have been the progressive factor.
There's been a lot of reaction!: Powerful people wanting to some how tear down, and wall up the internet to keep the people from being able to talk among themselves, as if the American populace were children in some Orwellian classroom.
This was not the vision of our founding fathers, not the republican ideals that so many American patriots have gone to their graves for.
The struggle is difficult and the sacrifices brutal, but in the long run: democratic liberty and the Amerian renaissance shall prevail triumphantly. America shall re-attain her former greatness and, empowered by our alliances, soar even beyond our former golden ages... a victory bought by the struggle of the current time. I implore the intelligentsia to contemplate, the pious to pray, the builders to re-build.
We should not brutely stand in the way of our own constitutional ideals... nor alllow barbaric souls to steal from us our free and rightful American birth-right
Addendum: This is not to say that a certain minimal censorship and discretion should not be exercised by digital presses, as all virtues including freedom of the press must have some moderation
