To Be a Poet

To be a "poet"
(as best I know to say it)
is to cease to be one individual
or one of the many,
to be a water drop rising from a midnight back-alley pool,
to be greedily ambitious
of serene sights and sounds,
to with Yeatsian ears
expect to hear the impossible,
to reach out with compassion
without a logical grasp of "why,"
to open your heart beyond the bounds
of the fool mind or dumb stomach¦
to let guitar chord vibrations
sculpt you like sedate clay
Yeah, to truly be poet
(I say, anyway,)
is to let it all fly till it becomes you:
one ascending bird of cosmic eye view
