Is democracy an absolute?

Recently, in the USA we've been talking about an apparent coup against our traditional system of democracy. I have to point out that democracy is not a neat American system; but a work in progress which came from many sources such as the European enlightenment, the vision of Thomas Jefferson and company, the work of many papers including the New York Times; and many other people and factors. Yet American democracy today has been hijacked by misdguided elitists; People don't know how to get the right information; feel abused by the authorities; and have become deeply skeptical even of democracy itself unfortunately.
