Elephants Shoes

George is a big grey Elephant,
The kind you’d like to meet,
He has huge grey ears, large brown eyes,
And enormous grey flat feet.
Thump, thud, thump, thud,
Is how his rhythm went,
Through the earth a mighty thump,
George's flat feet sent.
This was fine for George,
He didn’t mind thumping around,
But that constant thump sent an awful bump,
To those who live underground.
Now Sorrel’s a lazy Meerkat.
He’d sleep for hours in the shade,
He lived underground and hated the sound,
That George's flat feet made.
Sorrel’s friends who lived with him,
In those tunnels in the sand,
Held a meeting to discuss this fuss,
And the thumps they couldn’t stand.
They surfaced in the morning,
As George was bumbling around,
Ah excuse me Sir, could we have a word.
Asked the Meerkats stood on a mound.
We’ve a problem with this noise, said Sorrel,
And we’d like to make this clear,
It’s rather hard to sleep down there,
When you’re thumping around up here.
I’ve got really big flat feet said George,
There’s not much I can do,
I’m sorry that my thumps and bumps,
Have been disturbing you.
We can fix this problem, Sorrel said,
You really have nothing to lose,
We’ll bind up some leaves get bark from those trees,
And make you some comfortable shoes.
Comfortable shoes? Comfortable shoes?
George repeated it twice,
Yes Elephant’s shoes, made just for you,
All painted to make them look nice.
George said ok and the following day,
He giggled and wriggled a lot,
As the meerkats cleaned and measured his feet,
They'd found his ticklish spot.
Trees were shaken and leaves were taken,
And grasses were cut and folded,
A design was clawed and tree bark gnawed,
And soles for the shoes were moulded.
George slipped in his feet when the shoes were complete,
They were painted his favourite blue.
The meerkats rejoiced at the thought of less noise,
George thanked them, inspecting each shoe.
Now when George walks around there’s hardly a sound,
Just his tail swishing insects away,
And deep down below in their quiet shady hole,
The meerkats can sleep till midday.
