All in an Autumn Evening

Trapped in a time-warp
dusk succumbs to dark;
my thoughts fast-track back
to a black, shiny baby-grand...
 
a child, hiding underneath – 
chasing the tail of a cat –
caught it – before she did.
 
Watching her mother’s feet
in spangled, golden shoes, 
as they rose, and fell, oh, 
so deftly, singing along
to a rippling appassionato. 
 
How I long to relive those days;
to be sitting round a table – set
for Mah Jong with its ‘four winds’ 
and tiny, bamboo tablets, faced 
in ivory. 
 
Sundays in the parlour,
chestnuts roasting on the fire.  Yes,
really.  It doesn’t just happen
in Christmas songs, because we
actually did, then.  
 
Father would come in after work
with a backdrop of the passage light...
his hair, matted on his temples,
with tales of who, when, what
happened on his bus that shift,
 
his face lit with satisfaction
of a long day’s drudge done
to perfection.
 
The important things in life
are ours for the gleaning...the upside 
down reflection of the world in a puddle...
 
the skip of a kid’s heart at the sound
of a school bell ringing...the snatch
of breath when a sunburst rips apart
a darkening autumn evening sky. 
 
Spring, summer, autumn, winter...
all seasons passing, and yet, what if
we could put the clocks back for real...
relive those years, a lifetime ago, 
when everything went by
but time.

If only. Lots of remembered feelings and every scene so visual. I loved the rhyme in this, and the rhythm.

Such moments still happen but unexpectedly, as the remembered little incidents and smiles in this, – going back we'd just store them again, or ones like them, I guess. Rhiannon

I keep looking at authors I follow and think I will never catch up but  when i saw you  had passed the 1000 mark I had to read and comment.  Starfish Girl chose the same bit as i would  have.  It's a lovely image.  'With the backdrop of the passage light'  another great image

Congratulations on your 1000 pieces of inspirational work.  Can't read anymore but cataract being done to day. so hopefully with start to catch up with all my authors as I like to think they are.
