Not her shell-pink
silk chemise...
or the breeze
rustling the trees
nor the prick
of sunlight
through the leaves...
not the corridor
of wind that blew
her napkin
in the stream
nor the flash
of crimson toes
as she retrieved it...
or the way
she closed her eyes
sipping her wine; glass
cupped in her hands
that looked,
for all the world,
like she was praying...
not the wild rose
with its baby-fisted
buds I picked
and pinned
amongst her hair,
no – none of these
were half as sweet
as the kiss
she never gave me.

This reminds me a little of that old Fred Astaire song, "No, no they can't take that away from me".
I like all the simile's, all the kisses in your poem.
Especially the budding rose. It's all very smart stuff.
"as the kiss
she never gave me",
I've had plenty of those non-kisses in my life. Would they have tasted sweet? I will never know.
And yet it's funny how the missed chances or the unrequited loves or the kisses that never happened stay with you as much as the real kisses do.

It was the ghost in the machine. I've got a nice title for your poem:
“The kiss that never was”. Just about sums it up. But it would give it away I guess.
Cheers! Nolan &
(Your poems are beautiful. I feel jealous almost.)
