There are some moments
too beautiful to last
for if they did – the magic
they hold would dissipate
into the norm...
 
like two Red Kites, riding
the thermals, between dusk
and nightfall, to an audience
of spreading elm trees, etched
in black on luminescent sky...
till suddenly they drop
like a stone
 
the River Flit, shining yet,
with slivers of day 
and feel I should write a poem
but the moment’s passed, 
as quickly as it came; even so,
it lingers, still.

I know that feeling, that sometimes if you write it down it will be lost, turned to concrete instead of alive. I liked the movement of the kites and the 'slivers of day'. There's almost a chill to it, a fear of losing something.  A very good read. smiley

Hi there, catherine....that was just the mood of the piece I intended to convey.  It was earlier this evening I saw the kites, and I was almost afraid to breathe, wanting so much for that wonderful moment to last for ever.

I liked the picure of the elms too - am I right that it was they etched in black, or the kites, or both? I have been so enjoying the bare trees against blue skies these last few days. Rhiannon

Both, certainly, Rhiannon...the elms and the kites.  Yes, the late evening skies have been wonderful of late.  So pleased you got so much from this.

I love watching kites. There's a strange feeling reading your poem of capturing the moment, which you did, and then feeling it slip away at the end. I thought that worked beautifully.

The pair we have round here, had two chicks last year, and two this...and so the kite population must certainly be growing,

Watching kites surely is 'an out of body experience', one has to see to believe.  I am lucky in as much as we have some locally.

This is a truely remarkable piece of writing Tina.  How you sum up so well these majestic birds is beyond my comprehension.

I so admire how you are able to keep your poetry going,  I seem to have come to a stand still,  but hopefully it will return

Oh dear, Jenny, so sorry to hear that about your writing.  I am missing your stuff, very, very much.  But I guess we all have to recharge our batteries from time to time, and when I feel like that I always remember what someone once said about butterflies.  If you want a butterfly to settle on your hand, don't try too hard. Just sit still, and quiet, and in all good time one will come to you of its own accord.

Really pleased you enjoyed this poem. It was a magical early evening when I saw that pair.  I hadn't seem them in ages, and then, out of the blue, quite literally, they appeared.

Jenny, hope you don't mind but just wanted to add my don't worry to Tina's. I tend to write 2 or 3 poems and then there's three thousand miles of desert again and I can only write one when the first line comes into my head. Stories work in another way entirely. Try something completely different! Writing or otherwise. And apart from that, Happy New Year!

Hi Catherine,

thank you for understanding where I'm coming from.  My inspiration I'm sure will come back some time soon.  I've been so busy with other things,  just don't seem to find the time to sit down and think,  but when Christmas is over,  hopefully things will return to normal.

I hope you had a good Christmas and Happy New Year.

P.S.  I just need to take a leaf out of yours and Tina's book.
