It didn't take long for Johnny and his mates to get back to the Brothel.
They parked the car in the garage behind the Brothel, locking up and
walking through the back yard, kicking cans left lying on the ground
from previous drinking sessions, laughing and joking at how clever
they thought they were.
Opening the back door, Johnny shouted out, “Hey! Lilly...we done it,
we got the diamonds.”
Lilly came running out of her office fuming. “What the hell do you
think you're shouting for, do you want the whole world to know? get
in here now.” She dragged her son into the office, by the scruff of the neck.
“Sorry! Ma, I forgot, here's your diamonds.” Johnny placed the box in
his mothers hands, wiping his wet nose on his sleeve.
Lilly was over the moon, now if anyone found any connection between
her and Andrew Henvey, then she could say she had proof, that she had
passed the diamonds onto Mr Rydell in the Hotel and they were no
longer in her possession. What she didn't know, was the way in which
her son had taken the jewels.
Lilly thought she had the whole business sown up, not realising what
an idiot of a son she had.
When the police arrived at the car park, no one was there. The old
couple were inside the Hotel, out of the cold.
Two policemen made their way into the lounge of the Hotel where
the old couple were sitting.
Bernard told the police about the white Hillman Imp and the brick,
which of course had Bernards finger prints all over it, but also the
assailant, who would get nicked for assault and battery.
The barman had stayed behind, because he had information. “I served
that man, I remember him well, because he was asking about the music,
coming from a wedding in the upstairs room. He was also sitting with
a middle aged woman. She had reddish hair, you couldn't miss her,
she seemed to stand out, but she left and the guy ate alone in the restaurant, then he left.”
“Right!” said the policeman, “we will be going to the hospital now,
but thank you for your time. Hopefully when the man comes round,
we will have more information.” Turning to Bernard and Marjorie,
he asked them if they had managed to get the registration of the car?
“Sorry Officer, it all happened so fast, they sped off down the road,
like a bullet out of a gun.”
“Okay,” said the officer, well if you think of anything else, please
contact the station.”
The officers left the Hotel and made their way to the car, “I wonder
how the bloke is, in the hospital?”
“I don't know, but let's hope he can give us some form of identification,
it will make our job a lot easier.”
The night was cold and tomorrow would be another day.
