As soon as the guard had departed, Gregor gazed in the direction of the entrance, remembering the tunnel where the crystal was hidden. Grinning with anticipation, he picked up his torch from where it had been standing between two rocks and headed for the opening.
Pausing and wondering for a moment if this was the right thing to do, he shook himself getting rid of any apprehension that might be lingering, focusing on a New World where he'd start afresh, going into the unknown didn't bother him, he was just so relieved he'd no longer have to be a leader.
Forging on, Gregor crept through the fog keeping as close to the wall as he could, the air was so thick, even the torch no longer lit his way, it irritated him to walk blindly, thinking to himself how unjust that being a man of his calibre he should have to make this journey alone. He waited for the guardians to come forward, they would lead him to the crystal and the freedom he desired.
After what seemed like a long time, Gregor couldn't make out why they never came, he wondered if he was in the right location, or if he should turn back, it had been so long since he'd last been here, but determination kept him going.
It also bothered him that he was walking blindly, not really knowing in which direction he was going. Then suddenly in the distance he heard the sounds of moans, knowing it came from the guardians, a shudder went through him as their spirits were getting closer.
Gregor could feel the rush of a breeze, it made the hair on his body stand up, then as if from nowhere they were upon him, a gathering of almost invisible figures, each one breathing out cold air, a fine mist filtering out of their sinuous forms, their groaning, consuming him.
Gregor's body felt as if it were being taken over by unseen forces. “Please stop!” He demanded; over and over, till he fell to his knees like a frightened child, but still the spirits continued sucking his very life force. A whirlwind spun before him as he knelt, his head bowed as he placed his hands up to his face, but then his arms dropped and he was no longer able to move or speak.
As the spirits revolved, they began to move away. Gregor collapsed in a heap on the ground, they had taken his soul. No longer were they trapped, no longer did they need to guard the crystal – now their own spirits could move on, as they took Gregor's soul with them to a better place.
The tunnel became less claustrophobic as the fog began to clear. Now the only sound to be heard, was the wind whistling in the far distance, as Gregor's body lay still, he'd escaped his world, but his greediness had taken him much further than he'd anticipated.

My word, Jenny...this chapter
My word, Jenny...this chapter made the hairs on my neck stand on end. I could just picture it and such a ghastly end to his life...The thought of having one's soul sucked out - unthinkable, and as I have said before, your imagination knows no bounds, which is why, I guess, you are so good at telling stories such as this.
So sorry I have lagged behind these last few chapters, but I hope to catch up real soon
Have a good afternoon Jenny...I'm just off outside to water my veggies.
