I gaze up into the night sky
wondering if other worlds exist...
maybe people like you and me,
a billion light years away...
in galaxies beyond my understanding.

I dreamt I reached out for a star...
imagined the notion of connecting,
like a single beam...a strand of
some other worldly delight,
maybe a world of vision
effervescent...shining bright,
I marvel and ponder at the notion,

A cosmic – vast empty expanse it is not!
Somewhere in the black abyss of time...
through the volatile – shifting atmosphere,
fraught with fear...manipulated by the hazards of destiny,
that just maybe a mortal soul...staring up into their darkness,
with millions of heavenly bodies all around, wondering if life
exists beyond their wildest dreams, another time...another galaxy
so far away, where human kind live and there's night and there's day.

I really loved this, Jenny...right through from the first word, until the last. Particularly liked these lines:- "Somewhere in the black abyss of time... through the volatile – shifting atmosphere, fraught with fear...manipulated by the hazards of destiny, that just maybe a mortal soul...staring up into their darkness..." Hi Tina, I'm so pleased you liked this one, it was inspired by this new planet that has been discovered, that has all the elements of earth. Hi there Pia, it's great to know you enjoyed this poem. I have just been outside tonight, staring up at the night sky, only it's cloudy and not much to see, it's a shame, because it's the Winter Solstace, it would have been nice to see a starry night, still never mind, maybe tomorrow. Absolutely beautiful, this is, Jenny - got to be my favourite of yours so far, I really think you've excelled yourself with this it's simply wonderful :) My son is getting his very first telescope for Christmas this year, budding little astronomer that he is, though I think I may be more excited than he is at the prospect of getting up close and personal with our breath-taking cosmos. We're joining an astronomy club in the new year so we'll let you know if we spot anyone or anything waving back at us! ;) You've put into words so perfectly just what many of us think and feel about this wonderous place we inhabit - well deserved cherries indeed :) Have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year - can't wait to see what poetry 2012 brings out of your good self, if this is anything to go by we're all in for a real treat :) All the best to you and yours, take care, Rachel xx

Good afternoon Rachel, what a pleasure it was to read your long newsy comment. I'm so pleased that you thought this was your favourite of my poems. I really hope your son gets a lot of use out of his telescope and ofcourse you as well. That's wonderful, that you're joining an astronomy club, you will be well on the way, to learning so much about what's out there. I bought my partner a telescope twelve years ago, but I'm afraid he only used it twice, now it just sits in the shed, I keep forgetting it's there, so it never gets used, but now you've jogged my memory, I'm gonna get it out and use it. I do hope you are well and getting in the festive mood. Hope you have a ball at Christmas and that the New Year brings you lots of insperation. Wow! Amazing! So beautiful! I love, love, LOVE astronomy; mainly because I get this really cool, good feeling inside when I'm studying about other planets and stars in the books I have. And this poem reminds me of this, and it gives me that same good feeling. What a beautiful post =)) My favorite poem yet! Savannah

Really far reaching and mind expanding stuff. I could almost imagine you stretching up to the sky as you wrote it. 'Manipulated by the hazards of destiny' - some nice writing - and it makes you think too.
