Tulip

She said when she dies she’s wants one tulip
On the coffin
She said the significance of this
Is there is no significance
She said if there is to be a eulogy
You have to make it rhyme
And use your imagination
And fill in the blanks of time
She lived her life
Like a free brush on a canvas
Making lines go separate ways
So no one knew what it would mean
All the colours were unintended
And the clouds were deliberate
As was the smoke in your eyes
Nobody knew how hard she tried
The smile on her face looked out of place
In a world troubled by fear
I swear she spoke on a pillar of hope
That she was glad she was no longer here
I’m standing here alone with her name in stone
Every letter is a scar
And the graveyard is cruel and unkind
I know she’s laughing at leaving me behind
And here am I five years on
Mourning as if it was yesterday
Feeling stupid twisted and unsolved
Stamping on the memories that have evolved
How I wish I’d never met you
Because I can’t forget you
I have only thing I can save
It’s the day of the year I place a Tulip on your grave
