We once held hands (for my late sister)

I remember you
When we were young
Stealing from the orchards
Filling plastic bags
Climbing under the fence
Where the fox had made a hole
We never got caught
We laughed all the way home
Mum made apple crumble
With custard
I remember you
When you played that song
By the four Tops
You knew all the words
I wasn’t so keen
But sang along anyway
I made you laugh
The day I stole that sweet from your drawer
I can see your tears
Because you knew it was soap
I remember you
When I jumped off the roof
With an umbrella
Like the Penguin from Batman
And I plunged to the floor
You bandaged my knees
Don’t tell mum
My secret was safe
You were always like that
My safety net
I remember you
As the quiet one
Until I made you laugh
Your kindness flowed
Like the river near home
I was never alone
Now you’re gone
Like water leaving sand
I remember you
