AND THE CURSOR BLINKED....
(For my friend)
Sneak.
We viewed that summer through the bottom of beer glasses and like our
minds the image was altered.
We talked about nothing.
We talked about everything.
And still the fevered brow of apathy cast sulleness about our
faces.
This was our time.
The digital world spun around us but we paid no attention.
Electronic voices screamed out orders down telephone lines to confused
modems.
Words electronically etched to a distant screen proclaimed `The end is
nigh`
Nothing ever changes.
Nothing ever will.
But through our drunken summer we put the world to right.
We were right and the world was wrong.
Drunken no hopers - 01, World - 00
In our hearts we knew that soberness would reverse the score, but while
these afternoons of chemical misjudgement continued we chose to ignore
the future.
The present presented enough problems for us to cope with.
The future didn't get a look in.
But that was to change...
And so we continued through our 'drop out' summer.
The image of my friends framed by the bottom of a beer stained
glass.
Those were our days of no hope.
The beginning of our end....
....a drunken old 'down and out' stumbled, bottle in hand, into our
table and proclaimed through sewage breath -
"The end is nigh"
We drank the last remnants of our summer and placed our glasses
down.
A single tear of pure alcohol drove like a maniac down my unshaven
face.
We sat in near silence as the sound of life marched on around us.
We stared at each other with tears in our sunken eyes.
The realisation that we too would soon march to that very same
beat.
We left our table. The same table outside the same pub that we had
visited all summer long.
We would never come together in this way again.
The present was drawing to a close.
Neon signs pointed us to adulthood and uncertainty.
I took one last look into the drugged, innocent eyes of my friends and,
turning my back, I walked away.
...the end is nigh.
And the cursor blinked on.....
