Power and Status

Recently, I was reading an essay that Heisenberg wrote right before or around Hitler's rise to Power in Germany and it got me thinking about society's values. Do we no longer have any spiritual objectives in life? Are we obssessed with power and status and all its modes? Now, I am not comparing America to Hitler's Germany, but simply asking if the fundamental commonness we have with other people is materialistic commonness? In some ways, one of the few things that attract me to America is the fact that there are still spiritual quests in America. Bible studies engage in philosophy as well as the mechanisms of the Holy Spirit. But if even the spiritual quest is driven in terms of power and status, there is a problem.
