They burned the ground in humble town
and laid the meek to rest.
They laid the blame on some old dame
and liberty was stressed.
In freedoms awe was found the flaw
that justified this act
but one man’s stand, though surely grand,
does not create a pact.
The devils play while preachers pray
and lambs are easy led,
to sacrifice and pay the price
of freedoms raddled thread.
Is there a point where we anoint,
requesting, sin no more!
Then turn our back while changing tack,
set sail for homeward shore.
Is losing face such huge disgrace
that they cannot admit,
that though still strong they were so wrong
and so should now submit.
When history lays in future days
beneath a dusty coat,
I fear the judge - with wink and nudge -
will sneer at what they wrote.
If justice must bereft of trust
fly freedoms’ banner high,
then we should stand and faith demand
recourse and loud decry.
