One Alone

Empty glasses, two I see
A table set, for my wife and me
Seated there, no glass I fill
As times remembered, my breath does still
Happy days when we first met
Old promise’s, of days to be as yet
Green meadows, and long sunny days
Of years to be, but time not stays
But passes by, like the blink of an eye
Chances lost, I know not why
The bottle stands, unopened yet
Two glasses dry, as they are set
Alone I sit, now the sun its light has shed
Now all dark not bright but not yet to bed
Alone I am, in this home that once was ours
Waiting, long the passing hours
The day has passed, but for me no stars
What I wonder happened, to that time of ours
So long together, but oh so short
For time has wings, of a sort
The years have passed and taken their tole
Like a thief in the night, my love it has stole
When that dark shadow comes and my time is done
I will accept, that times arrow now has won
It will not be that dark shadow that I see
For that dark one, is not for me
It will be my dear wife who takes my hand
To guide me to that promised land
