Fat of the land

The fat of the land
Those eyes speak to me
Of life lived
Of battles won and lost
You seem sad
Thinking on yesterday
Something in your manner is drawn
Ebbing
Ebbing away, but I also see strength
Strength of character and tradition
A love of land and the people tied together
A mutual fate
A shared communal vision
Which will outlive you
Yours is
A deep love bruised and anguished
A longing
A strange longing for the past
Eyes heavy with questioning and a heart full of emotion
You’re old
And yet you dream of generations yet to come
You furnish the land, as your ancestors furnished it in your stead
From the heart grows love
Which breeds fierce man and women
Who til the soil and bring up families
And fill their souls with the love of God
