Once upon a time a little girl was sitting on the step of her house when a snake came crawling out of the grass towards her.
At first she was afraid but the snake said, "Please don't fear me, little girl. It is only because I am so cold that I wanted to come into the house where it is warmer".
And taking pity upon the snake, the little girl opened her pocket and let the snake crawl inside to keep warm.
After that the snake and the girl became good friends and he would often come to visit her in her house, crawling in through a small crack in the door and sometimes she would even sing him a song she'd made up for him:
Little girls and snakes
can be good friends, its true.
It would make my heart ache
if I weren't a friend to you.
for snakes and little girls
to be friends but thats fake.
You're the best friend in the world.
Although there are snakes who'll bite you
there are other snakes who'll try to
be your friend and in the end you'll get along.
a girl knows that when he's with her
she's with a friend and with a friend theres nothing wrong.
Little girls and snakes
can be good friends, I know
although some folks may shake
when a grass snake says hello.
some time to know it well
then they'd find out a snake
can be a friend aswell.
Although there are snakes who'll bite you
there are other snakes who'll try to
be your friend and in the end you'll get along.
a girl knows that when he's with her
she's with a friend and with a friend theres nothing wrong"
One day, however, her mother came home and saw her sitting on the couch with the snake beside her, stroking its head and because the mother was afraid of snakes and thought they were all venomous she shouted, "Get away from that snake. Its dangerous".
"No mother", said the girl, "He's not dangerous, he's my friend".
But the mother wouldn't listen and picking up a stick and grabbing hold of the girls hand she pulled her away from the snake and then she hit the snake with the stick until it stopped moving.
When the little girl saw what her mother had done however, she bacame very unhappy, crying and sobbing; so much so, infact, that she became very Ill and though her mother phoned the doctor to come and look at her he said he didn't know what was causing the illness and could do nothing to help.
But then the mother said to the girl that she was sorry for killing the snake and that if she could just bring it back to life then she would happily let it come into the house and visit her daughter.
And just at that moment the snake came into the room. You see the mother hadn't killed the snake only stunned it and the mother, seeing the snake, picked it up and placed it on the bed next to her daughter and as soon as the girl and the snake were reunited the little girl became better and she and the snake were best friends ever after.
