When greedy or materialistic people die, so the people of Ardolla say, they turn into Mariogs or "Spirits who steal".
Often when something goes mysteriously missing from your house, it is probably because a Mariog has stolen it.
And Mariogs will steal anything that looks shiny or pretty; they're just obsessed with having things.
For example, once even the Crown jewels of Ardolla were stolen by a Mariog who, putting them in his sack, flew off with them to his cave in the snowy hills of Marush.
But among the crown jewels was a sacred relic of the Goddess Merthatil; she of the green fields and forests who told the Prince of Ardolla, Prince Trinden to go into the forest of Kaering and catch a Bayuph, a hound with a giant nose that could track down anything.
Ofcourse, long before Prince Trinden reached the forest, the Bayuph smelled him coming and hid away in their Bayuph holes.
But Merthatil had given the Prince a magical emerald amulet that would turn him into any animal he chose and so he turned himself into a cat and when one of the Bayuphs smelled the cat it came out of its hole to chase him.
But as it was chasing him, he lead it into a cage and then, turning himself into a mouse, crawled out through the bars of the cage leaving the Bayuph trapped inside.
Then, when he had put a collar and lead upon the Bayuph, which he named Bertod, it used its giant nose to follow the scent of the Mariog and led Prince Trinden to the Mariogs cave.
But the Mariog saw Trinden climbing the hill towards his cave and, using the magnificent strength that Mariogs normally use for carrying off stolen loot, the creature picked up a large rock and rolled it down the hill towards him.
Fortunately, Prince Trinden had the medallion that could turn him into any animal and, this time he transformed himself into an eagle and, picking up the Bayuph in his talons, he lifted the hound up into the air and out of the path of the boulder.
But then, turning himself back into a human he continued to climb up the hill until he came to cave of the Mariog.
But the Mariog was waiting for him, perched upon the ceiling of the cave like a spider and when he entered it pounced upon him.
"Ha", said the Mariog, picking up a golden sword from the pile of stolen treasures he had horded and raising it over the prince, "Now I'll kill you and you'll never take back your jewels".
But then, just as he was about to plunge the sword into the Prince, the Mariog caught sight of the medallion he was wearing and all the gold and emeralds upon the medallion gleamed so brightly that the greedy thief-spirit couldn't resist taking it and snatching the medallion from off the princes neck he hung it around his own
But the medallion had the power of the goddess Merthatil within it and no sooner had the creature put on the medallion when it turned into magical chains that bound the creatures ghostly form.
Then, seeing that the Mariog could not escape the Prince took home the crown jewels aswell as all the other treasures that the Mariog had stolen.
