The reason why I rhyme

Gentlemen of the jury.
Please, listen to my petition.
There is no cause for such fury
against this happy repetition.
To rhyme is not a crime.
Some rhymes can be sublime;
poetry in its prime
and make my spirits climb.
Rhyme is sister to Rhythm
and works together with him
to give a sense of time,
like a little bell that chimes,
tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock,
in a clock.
Rhyme, you see, has a reason.
It’s like a returning season
and can be pleasin’ to hear
like chirping birds, so full of cheer,
when pretty springtime reappears
or like the chorus in a song
with which everyone sings along.
Now, I ask you, is that so wrong?
A rhyme is like an old friend;
that you’ve not seen for a while
but then, one cold, wet weekend
that you thought you would have to spend
alone, suddenly that friend
will pop round to make you smile.
And you might learn that rhymes are fun
once you really get to know ‘em;
a little touch of twinkle anyone
can sprinkle on their poem.
