Without so much as an “I beg your pardon”,
a horde of horsetail weeds stampedes the garden,
spreading wee fascist forests everywhere
till every inch is drenched in horsetail hair.
I wouldn’t mind if they were dandelions;
bright violets or varnished buttercups
but these are like something straight out of science
fiction that’s trying to eat my garden up.
I’m quite sure that their leader’s called Atilla;
each little fir seems fearsome as a hun;
perhaps it’s time that I bought some weed killer
before my poor garden is overrun.

The first one you see seems so interesting … ! Can they be got rid of with week killer, or does it have to be plain digging?? I liked your phrase of 'varnished buttercups'. We've encouraged the pretty Herb Robert, whose leaves go lovely colours in the autumn, and cinquefoil, but they spread quickly. Rh
