Please don't tell me I am mediocre

Please don't tell me I am mediocre
My dreams are woven with jasmine
And azalea
I am nine;
Please don't tell me
I am mediocre
For the ruler is fire
In my celestial chart
Of birth!
I am not a mirth
I am fifteen.
Please don't tell me
I am mediocre
For I am nineteen
I would go under the surgeon's knife
To correct mediocre
Please don't tell me
I am mediocre
I have a wand to wave
And eradicate the mundane
I am four.
Please don't tell me I am mediocre
For it is an adjective to mean
A vast array of dull things.
And I am a poet of eighteen.
Please don't tell me I am mediocre
That would make a bad impression
Upon my psyche.
For I am only an adolescent
Of sixteen,
Please ban the word mediocre
In this lovely language of our
Nation! I am forty.
I hate this word.

Someone used to tell me that
Someone used to tell me that "nice" is a bad word. Maybe they were confusing it with "mediocre". Maybe both are simply neither good nor bad, like the passing of hours,days,seasons...
I've been teaching a lesson this week based on "8 secrets of success". It's generated some brilliant ideas. "Mediocre" might be a pejorative term, but maybe it's the pejorative that's the problem. Nice thoughtful piece.
