Terminal Velocity

It was all going so well
in fact, you could say,
it had great potential
though it’s funny
how quickly this
turns into heartache
and humiliation.
I had started to dream
in fact, you could say
I had dared to hope
though its funny
how quickly this
turns into despair
and distraction.
I had spread the news
in fact, you could say
I wallowed in the
deliciousness of it
though its funny
how quickly this
turns into shame
and subterfuge.
In fact it’s funny
how often despite
swallowing the
rule book and
copious crossing
of meta-whatsits
and the regulation
leap of faith with
the mute button on
the little voice
I peak too soon
hit terminal velocity
without a parachute
and clean underwear
and
smash
into
a
thousand
tiny
pieces.
